A strange title for a strange piece: Richard refers to Richard Wagner, and the composer Hauke's ambiguous attitude towards the life and work of the music dramatist is the subject of this piece. breathing out occurs in two varieties - it is either an admiring fuuuuuh or a contemptuous pffff both of which are then rhythmically transformed. The characteristic features of the process of breathing out are a comparatively loud beginning, followed by gradual thinning out and finally decay, and these are recurring themes within the piece. The composition is based on two quotes from the Ring both of which are important passages for the timpani. These passages, however, are placed in a different context. At the same time, the accompanying instruments add an aspect of expansion to the composition. The technical set-up is illustrated in great detail. This interesting and demanding piece extends the timpani repertoire.

Un titre extraordinaire pour une pièce extraordinaire. Avec Richard c'est de Richard Wagner qu'il est question. Le thème de la pièce se base sur l'ambivalence du compositeur Hauke vis-à-vis de l'?uvre et de la personne de Richard Wagner: de l'admiration (fuuuuuh...) au mépris (pff...). Le geste caractéristique de l'expiration - suggéré par le début dense et relativement fort, puis par une diminution de la densité et par un déclin progressif - constitue, sous les formes variées de la transformation rythmique, un élément structurel. La citation de deux passages de L'Anneau des Nibelung, qui témoignent admirablement de l'utilisation en soliste des timbales chez Wagner, représente le matériel de base de la composition. Les deux passages sont transférés dans un contexte différent rendant pratiquement méconnaissable le motif du Nibelung. Les instruments additionnels créent ainsi un élargissement de la palette sonore. Des textes détaillés expliquent l'interprétation technique. La pièce constitue un enrichissement du répertoire pour timbales.
