Sweet Day is one of three Elizabethan-part songs based on a poem by
George Herbert (15931633) and composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams
(18721958), the others being O Mistress Mine and Willow Song, settings
of works by William Shakespeare. Ralph Vaughan Williams, a native of
Gloucestershire, England, had a lifelong interest in folk song and dance,
which is reflected in many of his famous works.
