First publication of the orchestral cycle Songs of Travel, setting poems of Robert Louis Stevenson. Three of the nine orchestrations are by the composer, dating from 1905; the remainder were scored by his assistant Roy Douglas in 1960, two years after the composer's death. Among the latter was the hitherto lost epilogue I have trod the upward and the downward path. In his memoir Working with Vaughan Williams Douglas wondered: "Should I score them in my own style (the answer was clearly no), in the style of the orchestrations he had made in 1905, or in the way he might have scored them in 1958 (which would have been vastly different)? The final result was a typically British compromise, but I took care to use in my scoring only those instruments which he had used in 1905."

Première édition du cycle orchestral Songs of Travel avec des mises en musique de poèmes de Robert Louis Stevenson. Pour trois des nouvelles chansons, l'orchestration fut écrite par le compositeur lui-même en 1905. Les autres ont été arrangées par son assistant Roy Douglas en 1960, deux ans après la mort du compositeur. Parmi ces dernières chansons se trouve également Epilog I have trod the upward and the downward path, qu'on croyait perdue. Dans ses mémoires Working with Vaughan Williams, Douglas s'interroge : « Devrais-je arranger cette orchestration à ma manière, ou bien dans le style que Vaughan Williams a mis au point en 1905, ou encore à la manière de laquelle il aurait composé en 1958 ? Le résultat est un compromis typiquement britannique, bien que j'aie pris soin de ne choisir que des instruments que Vaughan Williams aurait sélectionné lui-même en 1905. »
