Calico was commissioned by and dedicated to the Iowa Bandmasters Association 1995 All State Middle School Honor Band. It opens in the key of E-flat in 4/4 meter. The quarter note is equal to 96 to 108 beats per minute. The meter changes several times between 3/4 and 4/4. The tempo likewise changes several times slowing down to 60 to 72 beats and then increasing to 120 to 130 beats at the key change. The key changes to B-flat. There are some accidentals throughout. A piano reduction is provided in the score. This title is correlated to the Sounds Spectacular Series, Book 2, Lesson 7.
