The Overture 1812 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed to commemorate the victory of the Russian army over Napoleon's army that year. The composition starts with a religious hymn played by the lower woodwinds; then there is a confrontation between the Marseillaise' and the then Russian national anthem. L'Ouverture 1812 de Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaïkovski commémore la victoire de l'armée russe sur celle de Napoléon en 1812. De Ouverture 1812 van Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikovski werd gecomponeerd ter herinnering aan de Russische overwinning op het leger van Napoleon in 1812. Na een plechtige opening met een kerkelijke hymne die door het lage hout wordt ingezet, worden de Marseillaise en het toenmalige Russische volkslied met elkaar geconfronteerd.
