In his novel Of Love and Other Demons, Gabriel Garcia Márquez mentions Domenico Scarlatti as a music teacher. I was so delighted with this idea that I played through all his 555 sonatas. I could not get his sensitive and dramatic music out of my mind. I selected some passages and incorporated them in an aria of my opera. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti is an arrangement of this aria in which the vocal tenor part is performed by a horn solo. Peter Eötvös

J'étais absolument ravi par cette pensée, au point que j'ai joué l´intégralité de ses 555 sonates. Il était impossible de me sortir sa musique sensible et dramatique de la tête. J'ai choisi quelques passages et les ai incorporés dans une aria de mon opéra. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti est un arrangement de cette aria dans lequel la partie de ténor chantée est jouée par un cor soliste. » - Peter Eötvös
