The composer's inspiration to write this piece was Edouard Manet's painting called "The Spanish Dancers" and the performance of a so-called gypsy ensemble consisting of the instruments violin, clarinet and cymbalom. These are the instruments he tries to imitate in his piece. Improvised elements with unexpected changes of mood are meant to resemble Manet's spontaneous act of painting. Oskar Werner (born in Hamburg in 1930) played the harp in various orchestras; the last before his retirement in 1995 was the Braunschweig State Orchestra where he was first solo harpist. Oskar Werner (né en 1930 à Hambourg) fut harpiste dans de différents orchestres, entre 1959 et son départ à la retraite en 1995 comme premier soliste à l'Orchestre national de Braunschweig. Werner fut également professeur de piano et de harpe au conservatoire municipal de Braunschweig. L'idée de la "Rhapsodie en style tzigane" lui est venue en regardant le tableau "Les Danseurs espagnols" d'Edouard Manet et en écoutant un groupe de musiciens se composant d'un violon, d'une clarinette et d'un cymbalum (un tympanon hongrois). Dans sa composition, Werner essaie d'imiter ces instruments. Chaque partie, avec son revirement d'atmosphère surprenant, apporte quelque chose de nouveau, le tout semblant improvisé dans la plus grande spontanéité, comme le tableau de Monet.
