This composition consists of three sound pictures. When writing this work Oliver Waespi did not have any concrete image such as a scenery or a specific form in mind, but rather some typical visual movements. Hence the successive titles of the different parts: Procession, Dialogue and Waves. Numerous associations mutually link those parts as far as motifs and harmony are concerned. The motif of the ascending and descending fourth plays an important role in many a theme. There are many fourth chords by means of which Waespi tries to put a harmonic and unifying stamp on the compostition as a whole. Moreover there are similar or identical, though varied, motifs in the successive parts.The first part, Cortège (Procession), describes the dignified majestic procession by means of simple precise rhythms. At first the music is scarcely audible, as if coming from a distance; it gradually comes nearer until it reaches its climax in large chords, before fading away again. At each quarter note one could imagine a step. The second part, Dialogue, consists of broad outlines of dialogues between the different orchestral groups. Some instruments are asking questions, others are giving answers. After a rather sad passage, the music turns into a climax followed by a second passage that brings comfort and leads to a quiet ending. In the third part, there is a sudden movement coming up in the shape of waves. The principle of the wave, successively swelling and decreasing, dominates the entire musical structure of this part, even in the separate motifs.As far as the instrumentation is concerned there are the following notes: in the brass band version Oliver Waespi has a definite (orchestral) brass band strength in mind. If some parts (e.g. euphonium and flugelhorn) are played by several musicians, the conductor should feel free either to double or to thin those parts, providing the musical contents are not damaged. The same goes for the fanfare band in which the conductor can feel even more free as to the band's orchestral strenght. Anyway, a convincing overall sound is determining and that is to be realised by any kind of wind band.

Cette oeuvre comprend trois tableaux sonores. Les différentes parties sont étroitement liées entre elles. C'est notamment le cas pour les motifs et l'harmonie: le motif de la Quarte ascendante et descendante joue un rôle prépondérant dans plusieurs thèmes; il y a pas mal d'accords de quarte au moyen desquels j'essaie d'imprégner l'ensemble de la composition d'une marque harmonique conciliante. Dans plusieurs parties il y a également des motifs similaires ou identiques (avec variations).La première partie 'Cortège' décrit, au moyen de rythmes simples et précis, une progression digne et majestueuse. Au début, la musique est à peine audible, comme si elle venait de très loin; petit à petit, elle s'aproche pour atteindre un sommet avec de larges accords et puis disparaître lentement à nouveau. A chaque noire on pourrait imaginer un pas.La deuxième partie 'Dialogue' est composée principalement de dialogues entre les différents groupes de l'orchestre: certains instruments demandent, d'autres répondent. Après un passage plutôt triste, la musique évolue vers un sommet qui introduit un deuxième passage qui se veut consolant et qui mène vers une fin reposante.Dans le troisième mouvement apparaît soudainement du mouvement, sous la forme 'd'Ondes'. Le principe de l'onde, une succession de croissance et de diminution, domine la structure musicale entière de cette partie, jusque dans les motifs individuels.Oliver Waespi

Dit werk bevat drie klankbeelden. De delen zijn onderling door talrijke associaties met elkaar verbonden. Dat is o.m. het geval voor wat de motieven en de harmonie betreft: het motief van de stijgende en dalende kwart speelt bij veel thema's een centrale rol; er duiken veel kwartsakkoorden op, waardoor ik probeer op het gehele werk een harmonische en eenmakende stempel te drukken. Verder komen in diverse delen gelijkaardige of identiek, zij het gevarieerde, motieven voor.Het eerste deel 'Cortège' (Optocht) beschrijft het waardige, majestueuze voortschrijden door middel van eenvoudige precieze ritmes. Aanvankelijk is de muziek slechts zachtjes hoorbaar, als uit de verte; langzaam komt ze steeds maar dichterbij, tot zij in brede akkoorden een hoogtepunt bereikt om dan weer te verdwijnen. Men zou zich bij elke tweede kwartnoot een stap kunnen voorstellen. Het tweede deel 'Dialoog' bestaat in grote trekken uit dialogen tussen diverse orkestgroepen: de ene instrumenten vragen, de andere antwoorden. Na een eerder treurig deel groeit de muziek in het midden naar een hoogtepunt, waarna het tweede deel troost verschaft en naar een rustig einde voert. In het derde deel duikt plots beweging op in de vorm van 'Golven'. Het principe van de golf, met aanzwellen en wegebben, domineert de gehele muzikale structuur van dit deel, tot zelfs in de individuele motieven.Oliver Waespi
