Water Spirits for 7 Solo Percussion & Symphonic Band Nathan Daughtrey

Water Spirits is a feature for 7 percussionists and band that was inspired by the mysteries surrounding Lake Minnewanka "which translates to "water of the spirits") in the eastern area of Banff National Park (Alberta, Canada). The solo parts are a level more challenging than the Grade 3 wind parts, truly showcasing the talents of a strong percussion section

Program Notes
Water Spirits was initially inspired by tales of a mer-man sighting in Lake Minnewanka, which is located in the eastern area of Banff National Park in Calgary, Alberta (near the school that commissioned the piece). Minnewanka translates to Water of the Spirits in Nakoda. This inspiration lead me down the mer-man research rabbit hole and landed on the myth of Glaucus and Scylla in Ovid's Metamorphoses.' In essence, the myth is a love triangle between Glaucus (a mer-man), Scylla (a nymph), and Circe (a witch). In short, Glaucus loves Scylla. Scylla does not love Glaucus, as she finds his half-fish form repulsive. Glaucus goes to Circe to ask her to cast a love spell on Scylla so that she will fall in love with him. Instead, Circe falls in love with Glaucus. When he does not return her affections, Circe takes it out on Scylla by poisoning the water in which she was bathing. This turns Scylla into a hideous sea monster with the head of six serpents and a waist of six vicious dogs. The piece follows the outline of the myth, which is filled with darkness, longing, love, denial, and betrayal.

"Water Spirits" was commissioned by l'École Madeleine d'Houet, Sean Craig, director, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It received its world premiere performance on June 12, 2019 with the composer in attendance.

Program Notes
Water Spirits wurde ursprünglich durch Erzählungen über die Sichtung eines Wassermanns im Minnewanka-See inspiriert, der sich im östlichen Teil des Banff-Nationalparks in Calgary, Alberta, befindet (in der Nähe der Schule, die das Stück in Auftrag gegeben hat). Minnewanka bedeutet auf Nakoda "Wasser der Geister". Diese Inspiration führte mich in das Kaninchenloch der Mer-Man-Forschung und landete beim Mythos von Glaucus und Scylla in Ovids Metamorphosen". Im Wesentlichen handelt der Mythos von einer Dreiecksbeziehung zwischen Glaucus (einem Meermenschen), Scylla (einer Nymphe) und Circe (einer Hexe). Kurz gesagt, Glaucus liebt Scylla. Scylla liebt Glaucus nicht, da sie seine halbfische Gestalt abstoßend findet. Glaucus geht zu Circe, um sie zu bitten, einen Liebeszauber auf Scylla zu sprechen, damit sie sich in ihn verliebt. Stattdessen verliebt sich Circe in Glaucus. Als er ihre Zuneigung nicht erwidert, lässt Circe es an Scylla aus, indem sie das Wasser vergiftet, in dem sie gebadet hat. Dadurch verwandelt sich Skylla in ein abscheuliches Seeungeheuer mit dem Kopf von sechs Schlangen und einem Bauch von sechs bösartigen Hunden. Das Stück folgt den Umrissen des Mythos, der von Dunkelheit, Sehnsucht, Liebe, Verleugnung und Verrat geprägt ist.

"Water Spirits" wurde von der École Madeleine d'Houet, Sean Craig, Direktor, in Calgary, Alberta, Kanada, in Auftrag gegeben. Es wurde am 12. Juni 2019 im Beisein des Komponisten uraufgeführt.
