Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While studying at Harvard University he conducted the university symphonic band. In 1936 he was engaged as arranger with the famous Boston Pops Orchestra. During this period and also while working as a captain for the Intelligence Service during the war, Anderson composed several hits such as Jazz Pizzicato and The Syncopated Clock. After the war he wrote some more serious music, such as the Irish suite (with the famous dance song Rakes of Mallow) and several evergreens such as The Typewriter, Sandpaper Ballet and Blue Tango.

In 1936 werd hij als arrangeur verbonden aan het beroemde 'Boston Pops Orchestra'. Tijdens deze peiode en ook zijn tijd bij het leger (kapitein bij de inlichtingendienst) componeerde hij de beroemde hits Jazz Pizzicato en The Syncopated Clock. Na de oorlog componeerde hij o.a. wat serieuzere werken als de Irish suite met de beroemde Rakes of Mallow en de evergreens als The Typewriter, Sandpaper Ballet en Blue Tango.
