Alford was known as the March King in England. The Standard of St. George is one of the more unique marches he composed, for it does not have a traditional introduction. The dynamic fanfare starts the march off and does not waver. The march is said to have been inspired by Alford's experience watching "The Trooping Colour at Horse Guards Parade".
