Karl Jenkins composed Cantata Memoria as a commemorative work exploring themes of loss, particularly remembering the children who perished in the Aberfan tragedy in 1966 when a mining spoil tip collapsed and buried a school. The first part of the work deals with the tragedy itself and the second part moves from darkness to light, reliving memories and celebrating childhood. Scored for soprano, baritone, young voices, chorus and orchestra, Cantata Memoria sets texts by Mererid Hopwood and has been recorded by Deutsche Grammophon with vocal soloists Bryn Terfel and Elin Manahan Thomas.

Cantata Memoria de Karl Jenkins est une uvre de mémoire dont le thème est la perte dans ses aspects souvent douloureux. La pièce traite notamment de la tragédie d'Aberfan en 1966. Cette année-là, un glissement de terril détruit une école dans un village de mineurs gallois, provoquant la mort de 144 personnes dont 114 enfants. La première partie de l'uvre traite de cette tragédie tandis que la deuxième partie mène l'auditoire de l'obscurité vers la lumière, pour faire émerger des souvenirs et célébrer l'enfance. Ecrite pour soprano, baryton, chur mixte, voix d´enfants et orchestre, Cantata Memoria met en musique des textes de la poète galloise Mererid Hopwood. L'uvre a été enregistrée par les solistes vocaux Bryn Terfel et Elin Manahan Thomas sous le label Deutsche Grammophon.
