Concerto for Trumpet

Concerto for Trumpet Kamillo Lendvay

Lendvay was commissioned by the Hungarian Culture Ministerium to compose this
concerto for the International Trumpet Award' competition.
The concerto was first performed by the trumpet player György Gesler
with The Budapest Symphonic Band, conducted by Laci Marosi.
This beautiful concerto is written in the style of the famous Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.
The technical requirements for both the soloist and the orchestra are extremely demanding.

The first movement "senza sordino"comprises legato improvisations (on a set tonal basis)
alternated with three scherzi. The pointillistic style orchestration of the scherzi require highly
concentrated ensemble playing.

Melodies play an important role in the second movement "intermezzo lirico".
The rubato melodic lines enable the soloist fully to exhibit expressiveness.

The finale movement "rondo in modo classico" is influenced by folklore.
This movement is dominated by rhythmical patterns.

The solo part is written for trumpet in C with emphasising the middle and upper register.
Technical requirements are traditional.
The extensive wind orchestra includes a part for flügelhorn.
