The Adagio and Rondo for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon utilizes the twelve-tone technique within a new-classic framework. The forms of both movements are well-defined and the themes are clearly delineated. The writing is almost entirely contrapuntal with the sole exception of the closing cadence of the Rondo. In other words, the harmonies are the results of simultaneously sounding melodic lines.
The Adagio has an ABA structure in which the writing is suggestive of a three-part invention, while the Rondo falls into an ABACABA pattern wihc culminates in a three-voiced canonic treatment of the main theme. Ostinato figuration is characteristic of the accompanying lines to the various themes of this movement.
