Short Ride in a Fast Machine ("Two Fanfares for Orchestra") John Coolidge Adams / Arr. Richard L. Saucedo
BHI 66173
Composed in 1986, this fast-paced and dynamic work took the symphonic world by storm. Available here in a playable setting for school ensembles, Richard Saucedo transposed the key down a third from the original and skillfully adapted some of the more complicated rhythmic patterns without sacrificing any of the excitement and drive. A wonderful introduction to minimalist music and one of America's treasured contemporary composers.
This American composer started his career as a student of John Cage, until he came to the realization that " minimalism as a governing aesthetic could and would rapidly exhaust itself." He coined the term "Post minimalism" to define his new composing style, emphasizing consonance and musical layers. He is best known for his operas on topical themes: Nixon in China; The death of Klinghoffer; and Dr.Atomic. His composition On the transmigration of Souls, in memory of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. Adams describes the 4 minute piece on this program as "a cranked --up, high-velocity orchestral juggernaut, insistently urged on by the unyielding pulse of the woodblock." When asked to explain the title of the composition, he replied: "You know how it is when someone asks you to ride in a terrific sports car, and then you wish you hadn't ?"
