Commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Town Hall, Birmingham, in 2009-10. Nicholas Daniel gave the premiere with Britten Sinfonia and together they have performed it many times since, with a recording on the Harmonia Mundi label. In three contrasting movements this is a major addition to the repertory of concertante oboe works.

Commandée par la Britten Sinfonia et le Town Hall à Birmingham, la pièce est composée entre 2009 et 2010. La première a lieu au mois d'Octobre 2010, avec le soliste Nicholas Daniel et la Britten Sinfonia. Depuis, ils ont représenté la pièce de nombreuses fois et enregistré un CD sous le label Harmonia Mundi. Le Concerto pour hautbois de MacMillan, avec ses trois mouvements contrastés, est un ajout précieux au répertoire d'uvres concertantes pour hautbois.
