This transcription of Stravinsky's neoclassical masterpiece is the brainchild of Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, trumpeter, recording producer, writer, University of London Professor and Principal of London's Royal Academy of Music. Both it and its sister edition for trumpet & piano represent a major addition to the repertory for the respective instruments. The composer's own violin & cello transcriptions, Suite Italienne, were the precursor for the brass editions, containing a selection of movements, whereas these new publications present the entire suite. In his erudite preface, Freeman-Attwood outlines the importance of the trumpet writing in Stravinsky's original Pulcinella and its relationship with his other works and with the gleaming elegance of the solo obbligato trumpet parts which pepper the cantatas and oratorios of Italy and Germany in the early 1700s [] The trumpet can be heard here echoing the past with its ubiquitous baroque' identity, while a fresh duo' text implores the player and listener to reflect the work further in a hall of mirrors, an hommage'.

Cette transposition du chef-d'uvre néo-classique de Stravinsky est le produit de l'imagination de Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, trompettiste, producteur, écrivain, professeur à l'University of London et patron de la Royal Academy of Music de Londres. Cette pièce et son édition sur pour trombone et piano représentent un complément significatif du répertoire de ces deux cuivres. Les transpositions de la Suite italienne pour violon et piano ainsi que pour violoncelle et piano, réalisées par Stravinsky lui-même, ont ouvert la voie à ces deux nouvelles pièces. Si les transpositions de Stravinsky ne contenaient qu'une sélection de mouvements, ces deux nouvelles éditions présentent la Pulcinella au complet. Dans son avant-propos, Freeman-Attwood souligne l'importance de la trompette dans la Pulcinella. Par ailleurs, il constate que la trompette est liée à d'autres uvres de Stravinsky, et que « l'élégance brillante d'un solo de trompette prend racine dans les cantates et les oratorios des années 1700 en Italie et en Allemagne. [] La trompette peut ici être interprétée avec une identité baroque comme un écho du passé, alors qu'un « duo » incite les musiciens et le public à se refléter l'uvre dans une galerie des glaces, « un hommage » ».
