The pentatonic, so characteristic of Japanese folk music, plays an important role in this work. After a short introduction, we hear the theme, which subsequently undergoes a number of metamorphoses. Sometime, the original theme gives way to other folk song elements. Towards the end, a new theme appears a little Japanes dance tune played by flutes and clarinets. Yet another theme arises from this. In the finale, the three themes come together, and finally the main theme predominates.

Le mode pentatonique, si caractéristique de la musique populaire japonaise, joue un rôle primordial dans cette oeuvre. Après une courte introduction, apparaît le thème principal qui fait l'objet de nombreuses variations. Parfois, la thématique fait place à d'autres éléments de musique populaire. Vers la fin du morceau résonnenun thème nouveau un air de danse japonais -, interprété par flûtes et clarinettes. Dans le final, les trois thèmes s'interpénètrent mais le thème principal finit par l'emporter.

De voor de Japanse volksmuziek zo karakteristieke pentatoniek, speelt in dit werk een belangrijke rol. Na een korte inleiding klinkt het thema, dat vervolgens een aantal gedaantewisselingen ondergaat. De oorspronkelijke thematiek maakt soms plaats voor andere volksliedelementen. Tegen het slot verschijnt een nieuw thema een Japans dansliedje dat gespeeld word door fluiten en klarinetten. Hieruit onststaat weer een nieuw thema. In de finale vloeien de drie thema's samen, waarbij het hoofdthema tenslotte de boventoon voert.
