Der erste Teil, Allegro, beginnt turbulent; die kantigen Themen im Blech und das turbulente Spiel im Holz bieten viel Konflikt. Die nächste lyrische Episode im Wald mit ihrer ruhigen und fließenden Melodie bildet einen großen Kontrast zum ersten Thema. Der zweite Satz, Adagio Molto, hat im ersten und letzten Satz eine Stimmung, die zwischen lyrischer Kantabilität, Ruhe und Resignation wechselt. Der Mittelsatz 'Pesante' hat ein rebellisches, hartnäckiges Thema. Der dritte Satz, Scherzo Finale, hat einen spielerischen rhythmischen Charakter.
