Norwegian Rustic Dance is the result of a desire to compose a lively piece in the tradition of Norwegian folk music. Halling, a Norwegian folkdance, is a robust, lively and stylish dance. One of the most prominent characteristics of this dance is found in the finale where the dancers perform a Hallingkast, which is a step where the dancers kick a hat which is suspended at the end of a tall pole.
In Norwegian Rustic Dance Helge Hurum combines the tradition of Norwegian folk music with the rhythm and chord progressions of jazz.

Det spesielle med Hallingen er avslutningen der danseren(e) gjør Hallingkastet, et sprang hvor danseren(e) med foten sparker ned en hatt, holdt oppe i enden av en stang.
