En 1846 Berlioz écrivait la Marche Hongroise qu'il intégrait plus tard cette année dans son grand uvre La Damnation de Faust. La marche était écrite sur le conseil des gens qui avaient persuadés Berlioz que le public hongrois, pour lequel il devait faire des concerts cette année, serait très charmé d'entendre une pièce de leur propre culture. Comme thème pour sa marche il choisissait celui de la Marche Rákóczi . Le conseil s'avérait bon car le concert et la marche devenaient des grand succès.

In 1846 schreef Berlioz de Hongaarse Mars die hij later dat jaar opnam in het grote werk Le Damnation de Faust. De mars werd geschreven op advies van anderen die Berlioz verteld hadden dat het Hongaarse publiek, waar hij dat jaar concerten voor moest verzorgen, zeer gecharmeerd zou zijn van een stuk uit hun eigen cultuur. Als thema voor zijn Hongaarse mars koos hij dat van de Rákóczi March. De tip bleek een goede te zijn want het concert en de mars werden een groot succes.
