This characteristically ever-evolving, single (29-minute) movement bears the remarkable title Responses: Sweet Disorder and the Carefully Careless, which is that of a book of essays by Birtwistle's friend Robert Maxwell... The composer must not be too precise in every part, a frequent failing of the post-Schoenbergian serial music on which Birtwistle cut his teeth. But his own imagination has never subordinated itself to mathematics, and certainly doesn't in this turbulent, scherzo-like, brilliantly multilayered score (a melodic thread always on hand to lead us through the maze of invention)... the soloist-and-tutti relationship, Birtwistle's abiding concern, went into a dazzling new dimension.

Cette uvre composée d'un seul mouvement de 29 minutes porte un titre intrigant : Responses: Sweet Disorder and the Carefully Careless (Réponses : doux désordre et attentive inattention). Ce titre est à l'origine celui d'un essai d'un ami de Birtwistle, Robert Maxwell. Le compositeur ne peut pas être trop précis dans chaque voix : un manque récurrent que l'on reproche souvent aux pièces de musique sérielle de l'ère post-Schönberg, avec lesquelles Birtwistle a fait ses premières expériences. Mais l'imagination de Birtwistle ne s'est jamais pliée aux mathématiques, et ne le fait toujours pas dans cette uvre turbulente, brillante et complexe, toujours avec un écheveau mélodique qui nous entraîne dans un labyrinthe fantaisiste. La relation entre les solistes et l'orchestre, une préoccupation persistante de Birtwistle, prend ici une toute nouvelle dimension.
