Beyond the White Hand: Construction with Guitar Player, was commissioned by the Julian Bream Trust and first performed at St John's Smith Square by Andrey Lebedev in 2014. This substantial addition to the advanced solo guitar repertoire reflects and expands upon an earlier miniature from 2007: Guitar and White Hand, Birtwistle's first piece for the instrument. Both pieces draw artistic inspiration from the artist Pablo Picasso: the smaller piece written for Forbes Henderson and sharing a title with the 1927 painting of the same name. The larger piece was composed in the centenary year of Picasso's Construction with Guitar Player after which the piece is named and the sculpture Guitar. Picasso made about a dozen sculptural constructions' during 1912-1914, many of which employ recycled or carved elements. A good number of these were destroyed and only one, Still Life was shown publically during his lifetime. Picasso's own Construction with Guitar Player was an installation of a partially drawn and painted figure to which he added arms made of newspaper that fold away from the wall to embrace a real guitar. In the foreground stands a table with a bottle of wine and this was photographed by Picasso in his studio in 1913. Musically, Birtwistle's Construction is a large scale, dense work of sixteen minutes' duration. It does not develop linearly, but presents fragments of detail, interruptions, digressions and loops as a deconstructed guitar in sound.

Beyond the White Hand: Construction with Guitar a été commandée par le Julian Bream Trust, et exécutée pour la première fois au St John's Smith Square par Andrey Lebedev en 2014. Cette contribution conséquente au répertoire pour guitaristes de haut niveau et professionnels élargit et réfléchit sur une miniature plus ancienne, datant de 2007 : Guitar and White Hand, la toute première pièce de Birtwistle pour guitare. Les deux pièces sont inspirées de l'artiste Pablo Picasso : la première pièce, plus courte, composée pour Forbes Henderson, porte le même nom qu'un tableau de Picasso de 1927. La seconde, plus longue, a été composée l'année du centenaire de la Construction with Guitare Player de Picasso. Entre 1912 et 1914, Picasso a réalisé une douzaine de « constructions sculpturales », dont plusieurs contenaient des matériaux recyclés ou des éléments sculptés. Une grande partie de ces constructions a été détruite : une seule, Still Live, fut exposée au public du vivant de Picasso. La Construction with Guitar Player de Picasso était une installation d'un personnage dessiné et peint, auquel furent rajoutés des bras en papier journal, qui pendaient d'un mur afin de pouvoir attraper une vraie guitare. Il y avait au premier plan une bouteille de vin sur une table. L'installation fut photographiée par Picasso dans son studio en 1913. D'un point de vue musical, la Construction de Birtwistle est une uvre dense de grande envergure d'une durée de 16 minutes. Il n'y a pas de développement au sens littéral ; la pièce présente plutôt des fragments de détails, des discontinuations, des digressions et des boucles, comme une guitare à la sonorité déconstruite.
