In July 1872, the sailing steamship Admiral Tegetthoff departed from the Norwegian port of Tromsø, carrying the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition of Julius von Payer and Carl Weyprecht. Objective: to find the Northeast Passage for ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific.In late August, earlier than expected, the ship got stuck in the ice. The crew then explored the area northwest of Nova Zembla. But in the summer of 1873, the ship did not break free from the pack ice as had been hoped. However, the team did discover a new archipelago at that time, called French Joseph Land. After a second polar winter full of hardship, the ship was still stuck. The crew members decided to abandon the Tegetthoff and return to civilization with sleds and lifeboats. In mid-August 1874, they reached the open sea - and two weeks later, mainland Russia. Miraculously, the expedition cost the life of only one member.The extensive accounts that exist of the expedition inspired the Austrian writer Christoph Ransmayr to write his novel "Die Schrecken des Eises und der Finsternis" over a hundred years later.
