Jacobean Salute could be interpreted as a miniature symphony. Originally, a considerable part of the thematic material was intended for Scottish bagpipes which is why the B flat major bass pipes are still audible in certain parts. The glissandi of the strings, for instance, are meant to convey how the pipes are being blown through. The introductory motif is based on a lament from the 17th century. "Lady Doyle's Salute whose melancholic mood penetrates the complete piece dates from the reign of James VI, King of Scotland (who would later become James I of England). The Scottish aspect of the composition is further emphasized and intensified by passages which resemble a Jig and a Reel (old Scottish dances).

Jacobean Salute peut être considéré comme un poème symphonique en miniature. Une grande partie du matériel thématique fut conçu à l'origine pour des cornemuses écossaises et, à certains endroits, les tuyaux de basse en si bémol majeur peuvent toujours être perçus. Le thème initial se base sur un chant de lamentation du 17ème siècle "Lady Doyle's Salute" datant du règne du roi d'Ecosse Jacques VI qui devint plus tard le roi d'Angleterre sous le nom de Jacques Ier et dont l'atmosphère mélancolique imprègne toute l'uvre. L'aspect écossais de la pièce est souligné et renforcé par des passages rappelant dans leur genre une gigue ou un reel (danses de la vieille Ecosse).
