The Grand March for the Coronation of His Majesty Victor Emmanuel King of Italy op. 141 was composed in 1861 for this important event in Italian history. Written originally for two pianos and arranged later by the author himself for solo piano, the composition does not follow the traditional march structure; instead, with its many different themes, it is closer to the form of a rhapsody. It certainly preserves the martial quality of the march, but there are also more lyrical moments, especially in the central section. The fairly dense texture with few exceptions and the prominent sonority are the other dominant traits of the piece. The transcription for wind band tries to capture these characteristics. However, to make it more executable and suitable for the wind band, the transcriber has simplified some rhythmic features, and added harmonic and rhythmic support parts and a percussion section.
