The present composition of Gioachhino Rossini, Variations in Do for Clarinette obbligato with orchestral accompanimen according to the title chosen by the author, was founded, as a manuscipt, at the Biblioteca Comunale of Bologna.
Although we have little information as to the activity of the pupil Rossini, we know for certain, however, that this work was composed about the year 1810, that is, during his last year of study at the Musical Lyceum of Bologna and it was, in all probability, written for a school concert given by the pupils of that school.

There was then, in fact, the custom at the Lyceums in Italy of having the compositions of the pupils considered most giftet executed at these concerts during the school year.
Works composed by the pupil Rossini in this period were Il pianto d'Armonia sulla morte di Orfeo (1808), Sinfonia a piu strumenti obbligati con accompagnamento d'orchestra (1809).
This is why we suppose that this work too, of the year 1810, was destined for a school concert, as the other works, perhaps directed by Rossini himself.
