This character piece was composed for a competition held in 1962 by the Norwegian Band Federation. Three prices were awarded and Geirr Tveitt won all of them.
The Old Mill on the Brook was awarded second price after the three-movement work Sinfonietta de Soffiatori
After this competition, The Old Mill on the Brook is the most performed of all pieces Tveitt wrote for band. It has a special fullness, portraying nature in rich colours, with grass, water, stone, forest and the darkness of traditional Norwegian timber.
This new editon for modern instrumentation is written by Stig Nordhagen.

[NO]Dette karakterstykket er ett av tre som ble til i forbindelse med en komposisjonskonkurranse holdt av Norges Musikkorps Forbund i 1962. Tre priser ble delt ut, og samtlige gikk til Geirr Tveitt.
«Det gamle kvernhuset» oppnådde 2. plass etter det langt mer omfattende verket «Sinfonietta di Soffiatori».
I ettertid er det «Det gamle kvernhuset» som har blitt klart mest fremført. Med sin spesielle fylde portretterer den naturens rike farger, gress, vann, stein, skog og mørket av tradisjonelt norsk tømmer.
