Gaetano Brunetti, who was born in Italy, probably in Fano, in 1744 and died in Madrid in 1798, was among the most progressive composers of his time. He joined the court of Madrid early on and under King Charles III rose to the post of violin teacher and bandmaster of the Prince of Asturia, the later King Charles IV. Under his reign, the musical life at the Spanish court gained in importance and Brunetti rose to be the director of the royal chamber orchestra founded in 1795. The present string quintet is committed to the concertante style. As all parts in this piece can change their function, the registers are often changed as well which leads to a string setting with the most subtle tonal nuances. This quintet is a valuable addition for interested ensembles.

Gaetano Brunetti, né en 1722 en Italie - probablement à Fano - et mort à Madrid en 1798, est parmi les compositeurs les plus progressifs de son temps. Il rejoint tôt la cour madrilène et, sous le règne de Charles III, il accède au poste de professeur de violon et de maître de musique du prince des Asturies, le futur roi Charles IV. Sous le règne de ce dernier, la vie musicale à la cour espagnole prend de l'importance et Brunetti s'élève au rang de directeur de l'orchestre de chambre royal, fondé en 1795. Le présent quintette relève du style concertant. Toutes les voix pouvant changer de fonction, les registres y sont souvents échangés, ce qui donne à la composition les nuances des plus subtiles. Ce quintette ne peut qu'éveiller la curiosité des ensembles.
