Third concerto for horn and wind orchestra

Third concerto for horn and wind orchestra Frigyes Hidas

The recently composed third horn concerto can be added to the list of solo concertos
written by the Hungarian composer Frigyes Hidas. This composition,
with its three movements, written in a romantic late nineteenth century idiom,
pays tribute to tradition. The prevailing character of this concerto is lyrical.

The first movement includes a cadenza giving the soloist an opportunity to display
his or her proficiency. The texture of the second movement brings chamber music to mind.
The exuberant final movement in 6/8 time is a "vintage Hidas".

Hidas displays in this concerto, just as in his second oboe concerto and his bassoon concerto,
a preference for the middle and upper register for the solo part.

Another similarity between these concertos is musical pleasure. Hidas' use of primary colours
and a bright, transparent orchestration guarantees a good balance between the soloist and
the orchestra.

It is a pleasant concerto both for performers and listeners and is suitable for professionals,
music student and advanced amateurs.
