Gruß an Kiel - Marsch Friedrich Spohr / Arr. Siegfried Rundel
Friedrich Spohr was a Saxon military musician. In 1864, he composed the world-famous march Gruß an Kiel (Salute to Kiel) as a remembrance of the entry of Saxon troops into Kiel, in which he himself had taken part. From 1868 to 1893, Friedrich Spohr served as the director of the military band of the 102nd Infantry Regiment Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. In 1882, he was appointed Music Director. Due to its title, Gruß an Kiel quickly became a popular naval march and also gained international recognition. In Switzerland, the march is known as the Zofinger March and is traditionally performed there together with drummers (Tambouren).
