Ballade for trombone (or tenor saxophone) belongs to the standard trombone repertoire. Frank Martin composed it in 1940 (during the period of the II World War) for the National Musical Performance Contest in Geneva (Switzerland).
It's the 3rd composition that together with other 3 ballads (for: alto saxophone; flute; flute-piano-strings) creates a Cycle of Ballads.
The piece is based on twelve-tone technique with a very characteristic personal style of the composer (a mixture of rhythmical patterns and tonality). In the classical saxophone world the piece is not so well-known and therefore not very often played.

Ballade für Posaune (oder Tenorsaxophon) gehört zum Standard-Posaunenrepertoire. Frank Martin komponierte es 1940 (während der Zeit des II. Weltkrieges) für den Nationalen Musical-Performance-Wettbewerb in Genf (Schweiz).
Es ist die 3. Komposition, die zusammen mit anderen 3 Balladen (für: Alt-Saxophon; Flöte; Flöte-Klavier-Streicher) einen Zyklus von Balladen kreiert.
Das Stück basiert auf Zwölftontechnik mit einem sehr charakteristischen persönlichen Stil des Komponisten (eine Mischung aus rhythmischen Mustern und Tonalität). In der klassischen Saxophonwelt ist das Stück nicht so bekannt und wird daher nicht sehr oft gespielt.
