A hoard of barbarians, landing on the French coast of Brittany, sees a majestic cathedral towering on the hill. Intrigued they climb along the path leading to the sacred building (March of the Barbarian). Coming close to the cathedral they see monks who are about to enter the church, singing a Gregorian chant (Mystic Song). In crossing the threshold of the cathedral, they are attracted by the play of light that the sunbeams, penetrating through the colorful mosaics of the magnificent windows, paint on the walls of the naves (Dance of the Flights). Soon, however, they return to their ships to bravely resume their journey sailing across the northern seas.
