Festmarsch

Festmarsch Ferdinand David / Arr. Gottfried Veit

Ferdinand David (18101873) was a prominent German violin virtuoso, composer, and music educator. As the long-time concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra' and a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn, he decisively shaped the musical life of the Romantic era. David composed a whole range of works in various genres. His most frequently performed work is undoubtedly the Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra'.
The Festmarsch' (Festival March), Op. 42, presented here, was composed by Ferdinand David in 1873 for a concert at the Leipzig Gewandhaus'. The occasion was the golden wedding anniversary of König Johann von Sachsen and his wife, Königin Amalie. The arrangement for Symphonic Band by Italian arranger Gottfried Veit adheres closely to the original, but has been carefully enriched in terms of instrumentation in keeping with the style of wind band music.
