Mendelssohn composed the incidental music for the play 'Athalia' in the years 1843-1845. The story is based on the play 'Athalie' by the French playwright Jean Racine. From this incidental music, the 'Kriegsmarsch der Priester' ('War March of the Priests') has become one of the most well known parts which even nowadays is performed on its own as well.
