A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza (19051991) left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Composed in 1954, Soir dans les montagnes is the companion piece to Jour d'été à la montagne for flute quartet. Imbued with a certain serenity and outdoorsy freshness, it is reminiscent of many of Bozza's other works: for its pastoral title, for its character sometimes calm, sometimes sprightly , and for an elegant, transparent writing style enlivened by striking rhythms and motifs.
