'Decennium' was composed in 2003 as a commission by the municipality of Berheze for its tenth anniversary. The composition describes the history of this town in the Province of Brabant, consisting of 6 different villages: Heesch, Heeswijk, Dinther, Nistelrode, Loosbroek and Vorstenbosch. The composition starts with a slow introduction, Adagio Misterioso, suggesting the atmosphere in long-ago days when the area consisted mainly of swamps, meres and low woods. (The word 'Bern' is a synonym of 'Born' meaning source or water, whereas 'Hese' is derived from 'Haisjo' meaning brushwood ). Above the dark sounds we hear far away trumpet signals announcing the Middle Ages. After a piercing crescendo, we hear the full sound of festive trumpets. A medieval dance, as was to be heard in the Heeswijk castle, follows. This dance gets a more and more stirring character and finally turns into a merry popular dance ending with a burst of laughter reproduced by descending scales with the muted trombones and trumpets. A slow transition with a quotation from a Gregorian plainsong (Domine Deus) and church bell ringing, referring to the Abbey of Berne, brings us to a romantic Larghetto. This part describes the quiet rural life in a beautiful natural surrounding. The last dying note contrasts with the threatening ostinato, referring to the rise of the industrialization, which provoked quite some resistance with the local people. Once more we hear the 'Domine Deus' but much more powerful this time. When the resistance calms down, the work concludes with an Alla Marcia. The first notes of the main theme could be heard all through the composition and now we hear the complete main theme again. The new town is born. A festive conclusion refers both to the tenth anniversary and the optimism and confidence as to the future.

Decennium a été composé en 2003 sur commande de la municipalité de Bernheze à l'occasion de son dixième anniversaire. L'uvre décrit l'histoire de cette commune de la province du Brabant composée de six communes: Heesch, Heeswijk, Dinther, Nistelrode, Loosbroek et Vorstenbosch. L'introduction lente est un Adagio Misterioso qui décrit l'atmosphère durant les années très lointaines lorsque la région était composée principalement de marais, d'étangs et de forêts basses. (Le mot ' Bern ' est synonyme de ' bron ', source, tandis que ' Hese ' signifie fourré). Au dessus des sonorités sombres nous entendons au loin des sonneries de trompettes annonçant le Moyen Age. Un crescendo mène vers une fanfare de trompettes à caractère de fête. Puis nous entendons une danse du Moyen Age comme on aurait pu entendre au château de Heeswijk. Cette danse devient de plus en plus excitée et se transforme finalement en une joyeuse danse populaire qui se termine par des éclats de rire, exprimés par un chromatisme descendant chez les trompettes et trombones avec sourdine. Une lente transition avec une citation de chant grégorien (Domine Deus) et des sons de cloches référent à l'Abbaye de Berne nous amène à un Larghetto romantique. Cette partie décrit la vie rurale paisible au sein d'un cadre naturel de toute beauté. Puis surgit un ostanito à caractère menaçant: la naissance de l'industrialisation qui engendre pas mal de révolte chez les habitants. Nous entendons une fois de plus le ' Domine Deus ' mais cette fois-ci avec bien plus de force. Lorsque la révolte se calme, l'uvre se termine par un ' Alla Marcia '. Les premières notes du thème principal ont été entendues à travers toute la composition, mais ce thème est à nouveau présenté en entier. Une conclusion dans une ambiance de fête réfère au dixième anniversaire et à l'optimisme et la confiance quant à l'avenir.

Decennium werd in 2003 gecomponeerd in opdracht van de gemeente Bernheze bij gelegenheid van haar 10-jarig bestaan. Het werk beschrijft de geschiedenis van deze Brabantse gemeente, die bestaat uit 6 verschillende plaatsen: Heesch, Heeswijk, Dinther, Nistelrode, Loosbroek en Vorstenbosch. De compositie begint met een langzame inleiding, Adagio Misterioso. Dit beschrijft de sfeer uit lang vervlogen tijden toen het gebied nog vooral bestond uit moerassen, vennen en laag bos. (Het woord 'Bern' komt voor als synoniem van 'Born' dat bron of water betekent, maar kan ook teruggaan op 'Birnu' ofwel modder. 'Hese' is afgeleid van 'Haisjo' dat staat voor kreupelhout of bos). Boven de duistere klanken horen we in de verte trompetsignalen die de middeleeuwen aankondigen. Na een indringend crescendo klinken de trompetten nu feestelijk en voluit. Hierna volgt een Middeleeuwse dans zoals die geklonken zou kunnen hebben op kasteel Heeswijk. Deze dans krijgt een steeds opzwepender karakter en ontaardt in een vrolijke volksdans die eindigt in schaterend gelach, weergegeven door dalende chromatiek in gedempte trombones en trompetten. Een langzame overgang, waarin een citaat van een gregoriaans gezang (Domine Deus) en klokken, verwijzend naar de Abdij van Berne, brengt ons tot een romantisch Larghetto. Dit gedeelte beschrijft het rustige, landelijke leven in de prachtige natuur. Tijdens de laatste, wegstervende toon verschijnt een dreigend ostinato: de opkomst van de industrialisatie die op veel verzet stuitte bij de bevolking. We horen nogmaals het Domine Deus, maar nu veel krachtiger. Als het verzet tot rust komt, besluit het werk met een Alla Marcia. De eerste tonen van het hoofdthema hebben de gehele compositie door geklonken maar is nu eindelijk in zijn geheel te horen: De nieuwe gemeente is een feit. Een feestelijk slot verwijst zowel naar het 10-jarig bestaansfeest als naar het optimisme en vertrouwen voor de toekomst.
