To The Director

The Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts, is a composer's delight because the tune lends itself so readily to a wide variety of musical presentations.

The opening section of this arrangement should be played in a somewhat singing style with a good flow to the lines in all parts. Use vigorous down-bows at m. 37 to establish a marcato feeling. Be sure the pizzicato at m. 45 is steady and clean to supply a solid background for the octaves at m. 53.

The cantabile section starting at m. 60 should be played with a firm tone, even at the softer dynamic level.
Strive for a big crescendo leading to an explosive tremolo at m. 74.

The closing section is like the first. Be sure the canon is apparent at m. 94, and move to the end with solid power.
