Skybreak opens with a quiet melodic/motivic statement that is repeated and built upon throughout the composition. The main motive for the fanfare (m. 42-99) is the opening figure in diminution, which in turn gives way to the melodic figure, again taken from the opening statement and again having its rhythmic values halved. The introduction (m. 1-41) should be quiet with some rubato, while the rest of the piece should be quick and with a consistent tempo. This is a piece that is fun to play and listen to, a great opener or closer as well as an outstanding contest tune!
