Apart from his 'classic', the First Concerto, Camille Saint-Saëns composed other works for the violoncello, such as his 'Suite' Op. 16. Written in 1862, the work lives on the composer's examination of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite incorporated in a Romantic tonal language. This edition presents the original version of the work: for violoncello and piano. (The composer later arranged it and exchanged two movements, published as CB 229.) The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a burlesque scherzo, and a sentimental romance, before it comes to an end with a virtuoso and rapturous finale. The tuneful and joyful-to-play 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello literature and suitable for tuition and concert alike.

À côté de son classique, c.-à-d. de son premier Concerto, Camille Saint-Saëns composa d'autres uvres pour violoncelle, comme la Suite op. 16. Écrite en 1862, l'uvre vit des recherches du compositeur sur la tradition, spécialement sur la suite baroque, incorporée dans un langage tonal romantique. Cette édition présente la version originale de l'uvre : pour violoncelle et piano. (Le compositeur en fit plus tard une instrumentation et changea deux mouvements, publiés sous le n° CB 229). La Suite, en cinq mouvements, débute par un prélude évoquant Bach, suivi d'une jolie sérénade, d'un scherzo burlesque et d'une romance sentimentale, avant de s'achever par un finale d'une virtuosité frénétique. Cette Suite, d'une belle sonorité et agréable à jouer, constitue un enrichissement de la littérature pour violoncelle et se prête autant à l'enseignement qu'au concert.
