August Halm (1869-1929) was both a musician and a music teacher. He first studied theology followed by the study of music with Joseph Rheinberger. He was one of the most important music teachers of the musical youth movement and as such he set new standards especially through his dedication to the works of Bach and Bruckner. By introducing elements such as "energetics" and "organics" to musicology, he thoroughly influenced other music teachers and musicologists alike - such as Fritz Jöde and Hans Mersmann. His first compositions followed Hugo Wolf's models whereas he later concentrated almost exclusively on instrumental music in which he tried to connect the "two cultures in music" , i.e. the fugue and the sonata, according to the example set by Bruckner. Viola players will welcome this composition as an attractive piece of romantic original literature for their instrument.

August Halm (1869 - 1929), remarquable musicien et pédagogue, étudia d'abord la théologie à Tubingen et ensuite la musique avec Joseph Rheinberger. Il fut le pédagogue de musique le plus important du mouvement de la jeunesse musicale du début du 20ème siècle et y contribua des nouveaux critères de valeur en accordant un soin intensif à l'étude de Bach et de Bruckner. En introduisant des éléments comme "l'énergétique" et "l'organique" il influença fortement des pédagogues et théoriciens de musique de son époque comme Fritz Jöde et Hans Mersmann. Son modèle de compositeur fut d'abord Hugo Wolf. Par la suite, il ne composa plus que de la musique instrumentale en tentant d'unir les "deux cultures de la musique", celle de la fugue et celle de la sonate, suivant le modèle de Bruckner. Pour les altistes, l'uvre présente constituera une composition charmante de la littérature originale romantique.
