The Andalusian composer Antonio Alvarez studied at the Madrid Conservatory of Music where he graduated with First Prizes for piano, organ, harmony and composition. He conducted mainly zarzuelas (Spanish operettas) but was also piano accompanist of the famous violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. He composed zarzuelas, pasodobles and marches. The splendid concert pasodoble Suspiros de España (Spanish Sighs/Desires) became world famous as lyrical expression of the Spanish musical nostalgia. You can hardly imagine music that sounds more Spanish-like and matches its title so well.

Le compositeur andalou Antonio Alvarez étudia au conservatoire de Madrid où il obtint plusieurs Premiers Prix, notamment de piano, d'orgue, d'harmonie et de composition. Il dirigea surtout des zarzuelas (opérettes espagnoles) mais fut également accompagna-teur du célèbre violoniste virtuose Pablo de Sarasate. Il composa des zarzuelas, des paso doble et des marches. Le magnifique paso doble Suspiros de España (Soupirs d'Espagne) est mondialement célèbre et il est considéré comme la parfaite expression musicale de la nostalgie espagnole. Voilà une musique qui évoque pleinement l'amour de l'Espagne et qui correspond tout à fait à son titre.
