Awarded Third Prize at the 4th Premier Music International Competition Pro July 2025

Composed to mark the 2025 Jubilee of Hope, a celebration inaugurated by the late Pope Francis, Iubilaeum MMXXV offers a recontextualisation of the traditional concert march through a structurally deliberate and texturally nuanced approach to wind band writing. Conceived in a spirit of both festivity and reflection, the work embodies the joy of communal celebration alongside the deeper resonance of consolation that lies at the heart of the Jubilee's message.

At the same time, the composition engages with a more complex spiritual dimension of the Iubilaeum: a message that, while originally intended to promulgate hope, has in many respects been overshadowed by a prevailing sense of uncertainty and despair. This underlying tension is reflected in the musical trajectory of the work, where moments of affirmation are subtly challenged through harmonic inflection, textural contraction, and shifting tonal centres.

While retaining the formal outlines and rhythmic character traditionally associated with the march genre, Iubilaeum MMXXV moves beyond functional convention by incorporating a more symphonic sense of development and continuity. Its large-scale architecture is clearly articulated, with contrasting sections carefully proportioned and dynamically interrelated.

The culminating return of the full ensemble is conceived not merely as a formal recapitulation, but as a broadened and integrated resolution of earlier material. In this way, Iubilaeum MMXXV situates the concert march within a more considered and compositionally rigorous context, aligning its ceremonial function with a deeper expressive and symbolic intent.

Composée pour marquer le Jubilé de l'Espérance 2025, célébration inaugurée par le pape François, Iubilaeum MMXXV propose une recontextualisation de la marche de concert traditionnelle à travers une écriture pour orchestre d'harmonie à la fois pensée sur le plan structurel et riche sur le plan textural. Conçue dans un esprit mêlant festivité et recueillement, l'uvre incarne autant la joie de la célébration collective que la résonance plus profonde de la consolation, au cur même du message jubilaire.

Parallèlement, la composition explore une dimension spirituelle plus complexe de l'Iubilaeum : une aspiration à l'espérance qui, dans de nombreux contextes contemporains, se trouve assombrie par un sentiment d'incertitude et de désillusion. Cette tension sous-jacente se reflète dans le parcours musical de l'uvre.

Tout en conservant les contours formels et l'identité rythmique propres au genre de la marche, Iubilaeum MMXXV dépasse les conventions purement fonctionnelles en intégrant une conception plus symphonique du développement et de la continuité.

Le retour final du plein ensemble ne constitue pas une simple récapitulation formelle, mais une résolution élargie et intégrée du matériau précédemment exposé. Ainsi, Iubilaeum MMXXV inscrit la marche de concert dans un cadre plus rigoureux et plus réfléchi sur le plan compositionnel.

Gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het Jubeljaar van de Hoop 2025, een viering ingesteld door de overleden paus Franciscus, biedt Iubilaeum MMXXV een herinterpretatie van de traditionele concertmars via een structureel doordachte en textuurrijke benadering van blaasmuziekschrijven. Ontstaan in een geest van zowel feestelijkheid als verstilling, belichaamt het werk de vreugde van gemeenschappelijke viering én de diepere resonantie van troost die centraal staat in de boodschap van het Jubeljaar.

Tegelijkertijd gaat de compositie een complexere spirituele dimensie van het Iubilaeum aan: een boodschap die, hoewel oorspronkelijk bedoeld om hoop uit te dragen, in vele opzichten is overschaduwd door een gevoel van onzekerheid en wanhoop. Deze onderliggende spanning weerspiegelt zich in de muzikale ontwikkeling van het werk, waarin momenten van bevestiging subtiel worden bevraagd door harmonische kleuring, textuurverdichting en verschuivende tooncentra.

Hoewel Iubilaeum MMXXV de formele contouren en het ritmische karakter van het marsgenre behoudt, overstijgt het de louter functionele conventies door een meer symfonische benadering van ontwikkeling en samenhang te integreren. De grootschalige architectuur is helder gearticuleerd, met contrasterende secties die zorgvuldig zijn geproportioneerd en dynamisch met elkaar verbonden.

De slotmatige terugkeer van het volledige ensemble is niet louter opgevat als een formele recapitulatie, maar als een verbrede en geïntegreerde oplossing van eerder geïntroduceerd materiaal.
