I Am

I Am Andrew Boysen jr.

Up-and-coming composer Andrew Boysen won the 1992 Claude T. Smith award for this emotional composition. Commissioned after the death of a high school band member, the piece is intended to be a celebration and reaffirmation of life. The various moods of the piece are presented with both power and sensitivity.
This work was written in memory of a band member who wrote a poem entitled I Am just days before his death. A celebratory piece rather than an elegy, this powerful work features an aleatoric selection and singing from members of the ensemble.
