This solo is originally for tuba and concert band. It is a traditional theme followed by a set of
variations, first in triplets, then using sixteenth notes, a
Grave section, the obligatory cadenza, and finally a strict march section followed by furious
subito allegro finale.
Catozzi's Beelzebub was the prize-winning entry in an 1886 competition for instrumental solos
sponsored by the Carl Fischer Company.
