The legendary "Seven Swabians" and their pieces of folly (this is a popular fairy tale in Germany) made the composer write his seven inspirations on the Swabian folk song "Jetzt gang i ans Brünnele" (I Go to the Fountain Now). The different traits of this motley group are demonstrated by multifaceted variations of this folk song.
