Swedish Festival Music by August Söderman (1832-76) was originally written as an overture to the theatre piece Some hours at the Kronoberg Castle on October 29, 1658, which was premiered in 1858. The author was Oscar Fredrik, which was a pseudonym for the future Swedish king Oscar II. Söderman reused the music to Schiller's play The Maid of Orleans which had its first performance at the Royal Theatre in 1867. Söderman's music was then very well received.

August Söderman is considered to be the first national romantic composer in Sweden. From his father Johan Wilhelm, who conducted theatre orchestras, he had a great musical talent and he was admitted to the Musical Conservatory already at the age of 15. There he studied violin, piano and oboe. Barely 20 years old (1851) he was engaged as conductor at a theatre in Stockholm, where he developed his splendid technique of instrumentation. From 1860 he worked with the Royal Theatre both as chorus master and as assistant conductor.

Söderman wrote Swedish Festival Music for orchestra and the arrangement for wind band is made by Jerker Johansson (born 1967) who has worked as conductor for GöteborgsMusiken (now Göteborg Wind Orchestra) and other ensembles for a great number of years. Today he keeps a busy schedule composing and arranging music, conducting and playing percussion.

[NO]Svenskt festspel av August Söderman (1832-76) skrevs ursprungligen som ouvertyr till skådespelet Några timmar på Kronoborgs slott den 29 oktober 1658 som hade premiär 1858. Författaren var ingen mindre än Oscar Fredrik, d.v.s. den blivande kungen Oscar II. Söderman återanvände stycket till Schillers pjäs Orleanska Jungfrun som hade premiär på Kungliga Teatern 1867. Södermans musik slog då väl an.

August Söderman brukar räknas som den första svenska nationalromantiska tonsättaren. Genom sin far Johan Wilhelm, som var teaterkapellmästare, hade han gott musikaliskt påbrå och han blev elev vid Musikkonservatoriet redan som 15-åring. Där utbildade han sig på violin, piano och oboe. Knappt 20 år fyllda (1851) engagerades han som kapellmästare vid Mindre Teatern i Stockholm och utvecklade sin briljanta instrumentationsteknik. Från 1860 var han knuten till Kungliga Teatern som kormästare och andre kapellmästare.

Svenskt festspel är ursprungligen komponerat för symfoniorkester. Arrangemanget för blåsorkester är gjort av Jerker Johansson (född 1967) som under många år dirigerat GöteborgsMusiken (numera Göteborg Wind Orchestra) och andra ensembler. Numera delar han sin tid mellan att komponera, arrangera, dirigera och spela slagverk.
