John Kinyon schloß sowohl das Ithaca College als auch die Eastman School of Music mit einem akademischen Grad ab. Außerdem verlieh ihm das Limestone College in Goffrey, SC, die Ehrendoktorwürde. Kinyon arbeitete als Leiter für Instrumentalmusik und als Fachbereichsleiter Musik für diverse Schulbezirke, als pädagogischer Leiter für Warner Brothers in New York und als Professor für Musikpädagogik an der University of Miami in Florida. Seit 1982 lebt er in Tuckasegee im Teilruhestand. John Kinyon hat zahlreiche Schulwerke komponiert und viele Märsche, Balladen und Ouvertüren veröffentlicht, davon über 250 bei Alfred. Seine Werke reichen von Schwierigkeitsgrad 1 bis 3 und zeichnen sich durch eine Fülle von Stilrichtungen aus.
