Boyd John geb. in Manhattan, Kansas, 1944. Er studierte an der Northwestern University, u. a. bei John Paynter, sowie an der University of Missouri-Kansas City, wo er 1981 zum Dr. of Musical Arts promovierte. Als Director of Bands unterrichtete er an der Northern Illinois University, an der Wichita State University,an der Kent State University und an der Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Er komponierte und arrangierte zahlreiche Werke für Blasorchester.
