Ben Hawkins is Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Ensembles at Transylvania University, where he has taught since 1985. His duties include conducting the Concert Band and Chamber Orchestra, and teaching courses in conducting, music education and music theory, as well as applied horn. A native of Virginia, Dr. Hawkins was educated at Texas State University, the University of South Carolina and Texas Tech University. He did post-doctoral work in orchestral conducting at the University of Michigan. Prior to accepting his current position, Dr. Hawkins taught band in the public schools of Virginia and Texas for five years.Dr. Hawkins has served as guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and in Australia. Since 2001, he has conducted a series of weeklong clinics for band directors in various cities throughout Mexico. In 2003, Dr. Hawkins was appointed Editor of the Bluegrass Music News, the official magazine of the Kentucky Music Educators Association. Ben Hawkins lives in Lexington with Cyndee, his wife of 27 years and a distinguished music educator; and their sons, Jay and Turner.
